Commentary on NIL in Missouri Lawyers Weekly by Mit Winter
In 2021 the U.S Supreme court allowed college athletes to be compensated for their name, image, and likeness. Since then, states and schools have enacted various rules to guide these new sports stars. On August 28th of this year, Missouri put a statute into effect that allows students to sign endorsement deals when committing to a Missouri school. This has been regarded as a progressive law by many attorneys who practice NIL law.
“If there are more deals, you are going to need attorneys — hopefully — to review those deals,” said Mit Winter of Kennyhertz Perry in a recent Missouri Lawyers Weekly article. “NIL deals aren’t always being reviewed by attorneys, but in most cases, they probably should be.”
Mit is widely regarded as an expert in collegiate sports law. Missouri Lawyers Weekly recognized him on the Power List in Sports & Entertainment for September 2023. This list was created to acknowledge the most powerful sports and entertainment attorneys in Missouri according to leaders of Missouri’s major sports franchises and other attorneys.
Having been a Division 1 athlete at the College of William & Mary’s basketball team, Mit brings his own experience and expertise to the field of NIL. He has represented college athletes and universities in the Big 12, Conference USA, and NCAA. Mit is also the founder and chairman of the Kansas City Metropolitan Bar Association’s sports and entertainment law committee.
